Magazine Art: Bicycles & Motorcycles

Bicycles became vastly popular in the late 19th century and paved the way (sorry!) for automobiles by creating a population that wanted good, smooth, hard-surfaced roads and plenty of them. Motorcycles were an adaption that combined the best and worst of the two. And then there were motorbikes, and scooters, and any motorized conveyance that could spring full-blown from the head of the American backyard inventor.

Note they sell chainless Bevel-Geared Business Bicycles, so the emphasis on the chain in the image is odd. Published in the January, 1896 issue of BLACK CAT. Artist: C. A. Ad for Monarch Bicycles, published in MUNSEY'S MAGAZINE in 1898. Jessie Bartlett Davis (September 1859 – May 14, 1905) was an American operatic singer and actress from Morris, Illinois, who was billed as "America's Representative Contralto" [Wikipedia]. This is an early example of a celebrity endorsement, though we have every reason to believe she actually rode bicycles: Here she is, riding. No artist's signature discernable.
